Pintail Gouache Painting
Edgar Burke,
Circa 1920s
Dr. Edgar Burke (1889-1950) was an avid fisherman, fervent wildfowler, and respected artist. Burke's favorite subjects, usually in watercolor or gouache, were those he enjoyed most in sport - game birds. Through his close personal friendship with Eugene V. Connett III, he was invited to illustrate two Derrydale Press books, Feathered Game (1929) and Upland Game Bird Shooting in America (1930), as well as providing covers for Grouse Feathers, and De Shootinest Gent'man, among others. Visible image measures 7 1/4" x 4 1/4", and comes in the 13 1/4" x 10 3/4" original frame. This painting was a gift from Burke to famous decoy maker Lem Ward of Crisfield, Maryland and hung for yeears in Lem's home.
